Health is an orderly state of body, mind, and spirit in which infirmity and illness are absent. It entails our ability to manage our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual resources to maintain a sense of well being and health. The concept of health can be seen from the way we treat each other and care for ourselves. The ultimate goal of healthy living is to maintain health. We can achieve this through diet, exercise, and stress management. A well-balanced diet and physical activity to promote health and can contribute towards reducing health risk factors, such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and certain forms of cancer.
In defining health of the American Medical Association has suggested, “Perfect health is the state of total well being through physical, mental, and social well being”. With this definition, there is an added incentive to strive for perfect health by encouraging us to eat healthy and be physically active. Health is associated with the capacity to perform the essential functions of life, such as breathing, thinking, and heartbeat. The power of health is enormous and the results of poor health can be fatal.
The definition of well-being is influenced by concepts like psychology, sociology, anthropology, physiology, and global health. It encompasses all of the sciences that deal with the study of human beings and their effect on the world around them, as well as those aspects of life that affect the individual, such as emotion and spirituality. It can also include successful aging, disease prevention, optimal weight, and the prevention of chronic diseases. Well-being has a tremendous impact on the quality of life and people who are healthy and strong have greater social, economic, and emotional well-being.
